Tea for Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty
September 9, 2016 - September 24, 2016
This one-act play by Eric Weinberger and Elaine Bormka highlights Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford in the transition years of 1968, 1974, and 1976. It was the first production that took place in the lobby. The play has both comedic and serious elements as well as heart and warmth and was especially pertinent given that a former first lady, Hilary Clinton, was running for president. In the 60s and 70s the public was often not aware of the lives of the first ladies. Betty Ford was opinionated and free to say what she wanted. LBJ and Lady Bird Johnson enter the White House after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Pat and Richard Nixon left after the impeachment. Gerald Ford lost his run for president.
