Assassins is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by John Weidman, based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr. It uses the premise of a murderous carnival game to produce a revue-style portrayal of men and women who attempted to assassinate Presidents of the United States. The music varies to reflect the popular music of the eras depicted. The musical first opened Off-Broadway in 1990, and the 2004 Broadway production won five 2004 Tony Awards. The Assassins included Leon Czolgosz – assassin of President William McKinley, John Hinckley – attempted assassin of President Ronald Reagan , Charles Guiteau – assassin of President James Garfield, Giuseppe Zangara – attempted assassin of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Samuel Byck – attempted assassin of President Richard Nixon, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme – attempted assassin of President Gerald Ford, Sara Jane Moore – attempted assassin of President Gerald Ford, John Wilkes Booth – assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, and Lee Harvey Oswald – assassin of President John F. Kennedy. The play ran in Dodge City from March 31 – April 23, 1994.
